Everything you need to know
Phenolic section insulation is a high-performance pipe insulation product widely used across UK commercial and industrial projects. If you have worked in plant rooms, risers, ceiling voids or service corridors, you will almost certainly have come across it. From a customer point of view, phenolic section is chosen where thermal performance, condensation control and space efficiency are all critical.
H&V Insulation supplies phenolic section insulation to independent insulation contractors working across the UK, supporting projects where quality materials and reliable availability matter.
What phenolic section insulation is
Phenolic section insulation is manufactured from rigid phenolic foam, formed into pre-shaped pipe sections designed to fit neatly around pipework. The sections are typically supplied as two half shells, usually in 1 metre lengths, and are available with a foil facing that acts as a vapour barrier.
Phenolic foam is known for its very low thermal conductivity, meaning excellent insulation performance can be achieved with a thinner thickness compared to many alternative materials. This makes phenolic section particularly suitable where space is limited or services are tightly coordinated.
Why phenolic section is used
From a customer and installer perspective, phenolic section offers four key benefits.
High thermal efficiency
Phenolic insulation helps reduce heat loss from hot services and heat gain on chilled services. This supports system efficiency, lowers energy waste and helps buildings perform as intended.
Condensation control
On chilled water, cold water and refrigeration services, condensation can be a major issue. Phenolic section, when correctly installed and sealed, provides an effective vapour barrier that reduces the risk of condensation, corrosion and damage to surrounding finishes.
Space saving
Because of its high performance, phenolic insulation often requires less thickness to achieve specification. This is especially useful in congested ceiling voids, risers and plant areas where space is at a premium.
Fire performance
Phenolic insulation products are commonly specified where strong fire performance is required for building services insulation, helping projects meet UK regulations and specification requirements.
Where phenolic section is used in the UK
Phenolic section insulation is commonly used on:
- Heating pipework and hot water distribution
- Chilled water pipework
- Cold water services where condensation risk exists
- Pipework in plant rooms, risers, ceiling voids and service corridors
- Commercial, education, healthcare, retail and mixed-use buildings
In short, it is used wherever reliable thermal performance, condensation control and a neat, durable finish are required.
How phenolic section is fitted
Correct installation is essential to ensure phenolic section performs as intended.
- Measure and select The correct bore size and insulation thickness are selected to suit the pipework and project specification.
- Fit the sections The two half sections are fitted around the pipe with tight joints and accurate alignment.
- Seal all joints Butt joints and longitudinal seams are sealed, typically using aluminium foil tape. Maintaining a continuous vapour barrier is critical, particularly on chilled services.
- Finish and protect In exposed areas or where there is a risk of damage, additional protection such as banding or cladding may be applied.
Good workmanship reduces the risk of condensation issues, callbacks and remedial works later in the project.
